DA MEMÓRIA I

“It often happens that a man cannot recall at the moment, but can search for what he wants and find it. This occurs when a man initiates many impulses, until at last he initiates that which the object of his search will follow. For remembering really depends upon the potential existence of the stimulating cause… But he must seize hold of the starting-point. For this reason some use places (τοπων) for the purposes of recollecting. The reason for this is that men pass rapidly from one step to the next; for instance from milk to white, from white to air, from air to damp; after which one recollects autumn, supposing that one is trying to recollect that season.”
Aristóteles, De memoria et reminiscentia, 452ª 8-16, apud Frances A. Yates, The Art of Memory, London, Pimlico, 2012, p.48.
